What is Nightfall Protocol?
Nightfall Protocol is an immersive, hardcore, story-driven, first-person shooter with extraction elements. The game is set in the near-future, cyberpunk inspired world infused with SCPs. Your main task will be to neutralize or contain anomalies while you are working through a bigger, overarching story filled with mystery.
What are the inspirations for Nightfall Protocol?
In terms of gameplay the main ones are Destiny, Control the Monster Hunter series. Check out episode 1 of the Devlogs for more information.
In terms of the story and world, it is heavily inspired by cyberpunk themes and the SCP universe.
The visuals and soundscape of the game is influenced by some of my favourite movies, directors and performers. Notable examples would be John Carpenter and Sam Raimi on the movie front. In terms of music and to some degree world building, I love it when artists create lore behind their albums or songs like Sleep Token and Ethel Cain. You can expect similar things with the game’s music and lore.
Who is developing the game?
Hey, it’s me, Dávid. I’m a Hungarian Software Engineer with a lifelong passion for gaming.
With almost a decade of industry experience I’ve worked with many languages and frameworks. Additionally I have a few years of non-professional Blender and Unreal Engine experience.
I’m currently living in Austria, Vienna with 3 of my cats and have been working full-time on Nightfall Protocol since May 2024. As of now I am the lone developer on Nightfall Protocol. In the future, I’d love to expand the team to include more talented people.
Why is the website so barren?
I am currently a one-man show so I need to make everything myself. Rest assured as time goes on I will continuously update the site with more content, for example a News section where I will also post updates about the project.
Will the game include multiplayer or Co-op?
Right now the game is single player, but it’s being developed with co-op in mind and will officially be available for players during the Early Access phase.
But what about PvP?
Never say never, but PvP is not planned. Nightfall Protocol is solely focused on PvE.
What platforms will be supported?
PC is the main target, but after the full release, the then current generation consoles would be included.
In terms of PC operating systems, currently Windows and in the future Linux will be supported.
Is modding supported?
Yes it will be. After the full release you can expect modding tools and support. In the meanwhile, if you feel adventurous you can try to mod the game.
What are the system requirements?
It’s hard to tell right now, but on my development machine (Ryzen 5600X, 48GB RAM, RTX 3080) I am aiming for 1080p 120fps on High Presets with a shipping build. I think optimization is more important than pure visual fidelity and I develop the game with that in mind. I will have more information about this in the future.
How will you monetize the game?
The game will feature a pay-to-play model, meaning a one-time purchase is necessary to play the game. After the full release of the game, additional free and paid content will be available to expand the world of Nightfall Protocol.
The price of the paid content will be maximized around 10€ which will fund the continued development of the game. In a push to make this content as customer friendly as possible, only the host of the lobby would need to own any given paid content for everyone else to partake in said content.
When can we expect the full release?
Both Early Access and the Full Release is to be announced.
Timelines and requirements can change and unexpected things can happen that affect them, so it’s hard to tell.
For Early Access there should already be a solid foundation and enough content for the player to enjoy for multiple tens of hours.
How much will the game cost?
Early Access – ~15€
Full Release – ~30€
What kind of content is expected after release?
Both free and paid content will be available along with seasonal events that will always be free. These will expand on the already existing game world and lore.
In these content updates players can expect new items, areas, characters, anomalies and mysteries to uncover.
How can I support the project?
In many ways, most of the are quick, easy and free.
The most effective way would be word-of-mouth, just sharing Nightfall Protocol content with others who might be interested.
Once the game is up on Steam, wishlisting would help tremendously to increase visibility of the project.
Last but not least, if you feel extra generous, you can support the project financially both on Ko-fi and Patreon, where you will get exclusive behind the scenes content along with early development builds of the game. Both platforms will receive the same weekly content, so it’s up to your preference.
Why Ko-fi and Pateron?
Ko-fi is more creator friendly in general and some people have a preference over which platform they would like to use to show support. There will be no difference in the content between platforms.
How can I provide feedback?
Either through the the “Contact” page on this website or emailing directly: hello@mortalmachinesstudio.com
You can also try to reach out on social media and I’ll try to respond to feedback, given you tag the appropriate social media accounts (listen on the top and bottom of the website) or by using the hashtag #nightfallprotocol
Do you plan on adding developers/artists to the team?
Yes, once it makes sense to scale up the project either through contracting positions or later permanent employment.
If you’d be interested in working on the game, please send an email to: hello@mortalmachinesstudio.com
